For many, working on a beverage cart in golf clubs is a dream job. It’s easy, sociable, and when it comes to tips, the sky’s the limit.
However, in a TikTok that’s amassed 20,400 views, beverage cart girl Makayla Spangler (@makayla_spangler) has broken down some of the less glamorous aspects of the job.
“Hot take, being a bev cart girl is not all that it’s cut out to be,” she said in the video. “So for starters, you do get harassed on the daily. And like, I have been around, like, drunk guys all my life, especially after graduating college, and so I thought I could handle it.”
She continued, “But no, you’re dealing with like, grown men who have families, who have wives at home and kids at home.” She added how these men would be “slipping off their wedding ring” and trying to pay her to kiss them. Or go on a date with them, and, on one occasion, flash them.
She went on to add that the money is very “inconsistent.” To top it all off, she recounted how she had a customer pull up her skirt.
“So, just think about those things before you apply to be a bev cart girl,” she advised.
Fellow bev cart girls back her up
In the comments, fellow cart girls could relate. “Worked at a golf course for 4 years in college,” one wrote. “Some of the sh– that happened could be Netflix documentaries.”
“The things me and my other bev cart girl talk about is crazy!” another exclaimed. “You’re not wrong at all. I have to warn other girls when I’m training them.”
A third shared, “Every single day I get a comment about my body. $50 for hugs, trying to pay for kisses, trying to pressure you into dates, and then they get offended when you stick up for yourself because it’s supposed to be ‘your job.’ I have to warn all new girls that are hired because they are all 18-20-year-old girls. Sad reality of babysitting grown drunk men for a living.”
While a fourth lamented how “when you are mean to them, they like you even more.”

Why are bev cart jobs so popular?
The industry has seen a surge of interest after dozens of cart girls have made the job their TikTok niche.
TikTokers, such as Cassie Holland, for instance, have become formidable influencers as well as cart girls. Holland has 1.8 million followers. She told Business Insider that, as well as making $400-$500 per day in tips, she has collaborated with brands.
“The biggest brand I’ve worked with was Abercrombie, although at first I was kind of skeptical about it and I didn’t believe it,” she said. “Why would Abercrombie want to work with me? But they followed through and it was legit, and that was pretty cool.”
However, she too shared that she has dealt with handsy customers, as she told the outlet that “it’s annoying and weird, but nothing too crazy.”
Moreover, other cart girls in the article, such as Ellie Dressler, Caroline Scheffler, and Danae Lyons, also said that they experienced sexual harassment on the job, with Lyons saying, “I feel like guys have a tendency to sexually objectify cart girls.”
In turn, it’s clear that Spangler’s experience on the job is the tip of a much larger iceberg.
Spangler didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via TikTok comment and email.
