'I'll be buzzing' - former Sunderland goalkeeper opens up on his Black Cats promotion hopes

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford would love to see his former side Sunderland promoted from League One this season.

The Black Cats currently sit second in the division and are unbeaten in their last nine matches in the league, which has propelled them into the mix for an automatic promotion place.

Lee Johnson’s side put in a scintillating display at the Stadium of Light last time out, defeating fellow promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday 5-0 thanks to Callum Doyle, Benjamin Kimpioka and a hattrick from Ross Stewart.

Pickford, who left his boyhood club Sunderland in 2017 upon their relegation to the Championship, still remains a supporter despite his move to Everton.

He made 35 appearances for the side for whom he progressed through the ranks for and in his only campaign in the first team was nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year.

The 27-year-old has since gone onto establish himself as an England international in the years that have followed his departure.

In an interview with SkySports, Pickford admitted he watched Sunderland’s victory over the Owls and is hopeful that their ‘massive’ support is rewarded by promotion to the Championship.

He said: “Yeah I’ve seen it last night, it was a great result, 5-0 at home. We’re in League One at the moment and trying to get out of that league, we know it’s tough and I’ll be buzzing if we get promoted this year into the Championship.

“The support and the fan base up there is massive, you see how many fans were there last night.”
