'I live in a rainbow home - some say I've devalued it but it's better than grey'

When moving into a new house, most people can't wait to start redecorating to make the property feel more like a home. But one woman has faced backlash after showing off her colourful home on TikTok, as users claim she has damaged its resale value.

Social media user Emily Eileen, who is known as @fever.dream.boutique online, shows viewers around her pastel home, with rainbow-inspired walls and stairs and her ceiling painted to look like a cloudy blue sky. The 15 second clip, captioned "I'll never be able to emphasise enough that I don't care about my resale value. All of this being completely and easily reversible", has been viewed more than 1.3 million times.

She said: "A comment I see a lot on home project videos is 'Wow, that is so pretty but it's going to kill your resale value'.

"While I do understand looking out for your future self, I can't help but think 'If I were to decorate only wondering what the next owner would like then I'm pretty much just renting from the next owner'."

Commenting on her video, one user said: "That resale value comment needs to be reserved for people installing urinals in their dining rooms - not paint. It's gorgeous either way."

Another user added: "I'm going to be honest, if I was looking for a house and I found this one I would buy immediately."

A third user said: "They act like you can't just paint over it if you decide to move."

One more user added: "You can literally just paint over it when and if you decide to sell. That is such a silly argument. Love the house! It's so unique and beautiful."

However, some others were less complementary, comparing her home to something you'd create in a computer game when you're bored.

One user said: "I thought this was a Sims 4 play through."

Another user added: "I picked a neutral earth tone paint colour with future buyers in mind."

One more user said: "I honestly thought this was in the Sims - I am so sorry!"
