There are several unofficial etiquette rules when it comes to staying at hotels that make one a stellar guest to have. Tipping your housekeeper, stripping the beds before leaving, putting all the dirty towels on the floor, etc. While these aren’t required, these simple acts go a long way with the hotel staff who have to clean up after you. Why not make their life easier?
These tips can extend as far as keeping housekeepers’ pet peeves in mind, which one TikToker was not shy to share in a viral clip. Hotel housekeeper Alan (@alanjoynhiphakoun) shared a PSA to solo travelers everywhere about the one thing they do that grinds his gears.
What message does this housekeeper have for solo travelers?
When traveling alone and you happen to find yourself with an extra bed in your room, you may be tempted to put your suitcase on it for easy access. However, Alan says this is a big pet peeve and advises against doing so.
“If you’re traveling solo and you are booking a double bed, I don’t mind you using that bed…but I hate when there’s luggage on the bed,” Alan shares. “Why your suitcase had to be on the bed?”
The TikToker continues that travelers can use the handy luggage rack every hotel provides for that sole purpose.
Alan’s second point is in regard to the ample number of water bottles guests leave behind.
“I appreciate you thinking that housekeepers [have no water],” he says. “Trust me, we have plenty of water.”
He then shows the LifeWTR and the Poland Springs bottles a guest left behind, urging travelers to “hydrate.” It seems this point is less of a pet peeve and more of pointing out how much water guests leave in their rooms.
“Couple days ago, I got 6 bottles of water,” Alan says. “I know y’all are thinking of us, but we thinking of you now. Have y’all had plenty of water today?”
Thirdly, Alan shares how housekeepers do appreciate any unopened snacks guests leave behind, such as chips.
To wrap up his PSA, Alan points at the bed behind him, reiterating, “Remember, you can lay in it, but not the suitcase. Drink your water, stay hydrated because we still in summertime.”
What did viewers think of Alan’s PSA?
Several viewers found value in Alan’s video, with many saying they are glad their snacks don’t go to waste.
“Good to know the unopened snacks are not wasted,” one said. A second wrote, “So hotel housekeeping DOES get to keep the unopened food l leave behind? That makes me feel a lot better.”
While Alan did not specify the reason for his first pet peeve, several users speculated why suitcases on the bed were a big no-no.
“Suitcases on the bed is a huge pet peeve of mine,” one said. “That thing has been on the ground, airplane floor, tsa luggage belts, and bathroom floors.”
When someone asked why luggage shouldn’t be on the bed, one user replied, “As a former Houskeeping manager our staff must make the other bed if it looks ‘used.’ It’s time consuming as they only get 30 min per room.’
Another said, “Suitcases go everywhere and touch everything even the floor . you sleep in the bed. thats all I needed to say. I dont even put my purse in the bed its so unsanitary.” Alan liked both of these comments.
Some viewers shared other reasons they never put luggage on the bed. “That and if there’s bed bugs you’re more likely to get them in the suitcase if it’s on the bed directly, I feel like. That’s why I always use the luggage rack or top of the dresser for my suitcase,” one said.
A Triple A article cited bedbugs, dirty wheels, and soiled exteriors as reasons to keep suitcases off the bed.
