'I hope you trust us again': Cowgate takeaway where food was kept in a bucket has been re-inspected

A takeaway previously dubbed the 'dirtiest in Newcastle' has cleaned up its act.

Inspectors slapped Shalimar with a zero-star food hygiene score after finding it caked in grease.

However, it now has a four-star food rating following a re-inspection while bosses have apologised for previously letting standards slip.

"I would like to apologise personally for letting you all down with our previous rating and want to personally guarantee that our standards will never drop again," posted the takeaway on Facebook.

"In all my years in the food trade I have never been so embarrassed and I sincerely hope that your trust in us has been restored and we at the Shalimar look forward to serving you all delicious food once again."

The Ponteland Road takeaway was re-inspected on November 14, weeks after ChronicleLive revealed the grubby conditions inspectors were greeted with earlier this year.

Blenders were covered in dirt, while meat had been kept in an uncovered bucket under a sink.

Newcastle City Council warned management they could be taken to court unless conditions improved.

However, the new rating indicates the authority feels the venue now has a "good" level of food hygiene.
