'I hope this is not a slippery slope of things to follow' - Whitley Bay Natwest branch is third bank set to close in town

Whitley Bay faces its third bank closure in only four months.

NatWest, on 18 Park View will close its doors for the last time on July 20, 2023, citing a 53% decrease in in-person transactions as one major reason for shutting up shop. This comes only months after HSBC and Halifax also announced their decisions to close their branches in the town.

HSBC is scheduled to close on May 2 and Halifax following suit on June 21.

A NatWest spokesperson said: “As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking because it’s faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives. We understand and recognise that digital solutions aren’t right for everyone or every situation and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no-one is left behind.

“We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them.”

According to NatWest, customers and account holders can use face-to-face banking services at any Post Office. The closest Post Office is 0.26 miles away and the nearest bank branch is just under nine miles away.

Cabinet member for the environment at North Tyneside council, Coun Sandra Graham of Whitley Bay said: "This is the third closure in almost as many months following from HSBC and the Halifax which is right next door. Whilst people might be doing things differently since the pandemic, and using apps, it is still taking out a choice for people of Whitley Bay.

"Particularly for the elderly, who are not familiar with using that form of digital banking, and who like going into their branch with the people they know. I hope this is not a slippery slope of things to follow".

Coun John O'Shea said: "I am really disappointed we are losing another mainstream bank from the centre of Whitley Bay at a time when we are planning to regenerate the whole town centre. I am pleased they have offered to relocate staff but I am still concerned we will have an office lying vacant for some time."
