'I hope they see that' - Brendan Rodgers signing aiming for Liverpool return after Bundesliga goal

Taiwo Awoniyi is hoping to impress at Liverpool after scoring his first Bundesliga goal on-loan at Mainz in their 2-2 draw against Koln last weekend.

The 22-year-old had not been included in nine squads before the suspension of the season due to coronavirus but inspired a comeback upon his return.

Awoniyi netted from the bench several minutes after being introduced before team-mate Pierre Kunde Malong earned a crucial point in their bid to move away from the relegation zone.

"Coming here is just to make myself better," the Nigerian - who is still hoping to secure a UK work permit - told the official Liverpool website.

"Even without playing for a while, coming in on Sunday just really shows I've really improved since coming to Germany. That's the goal with being on loan.

"Even when you are not playing, you just have to be ready and keep on improving yourself and wait for your time as well.

"I don't think I'm the same player as I was in the last few years. I personally have seen improvement in my game and I believe most Liverpool coaches have seen that as well.

"I just have to be prepared to improve myself and work on my weak points as well. When I'm back at Liverpool, I hope they will see that."

Awoniyi scored 11 goals in 16 appearances while on-loan at Royal Excel Mouscron in 2019 and he has had spells with Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen and Gent after arriving in 2015.

With his first Mainz goal under his belt, he is hoping to be involved in Sunday's visit of RB Leipzig.

"For me, I've always believed," he added.

"I just have to fight and I just have to keep on going. Hopefully we can move ahead from there."
