'I haven’t done well enough' admits relegated Notts County chief Neal Ardley

Neal Ardley says he will criticise himself over Notts County’s relegation from the Football League and admitted: “I haven’t done well enough.”

The Magpies were beaten 3-1 by Swindon in a game they needed to win but even if they had, Macclesfield’s point at home to Cambridge would have condemned them to the drop regardless.

It means Notts lost their status as the world’s oldest professional Football League club in a shambolic season on and off the pitch.

Magpies boss Ardley, who was appointed last November, said Christmas and the New Year had proven to be a huge turning point in their quest for safety.

“I look in the mirror, I always do,” he said.

“I haven’t been able to turn it around. I haven’t done well enough.

“There’s a lot of factors that make the job hard and have done.

“I will criticise myself and I will be low for a while.

“We needed play-off form, and we just couldn’t do it.”
