'I have to say it didn't work' - Martin Dubravka criticises Newcastle's tactics against Leicester

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has bluntly told Sky Sports that Steve Bruce's decision to change to four at the back against Leicester 'didn't work'.

The Magpies were thrashed 5-0 by the Foxes on Sunday leaving them second bottom of the Premier League table.

Bruce made the decision to start with four at the back following an injury to left-wing-back Jetro Willems. With other left-wing-back Matt Ritchie also out injured, Bruce opted against playing with a player unnatural to the role to keep the regular 5-2-2-1 system and decided to start with a more expansive 4-2-3-1 formation.

However, it backfired as Brendan Rodgers' side ran riot to move up to third in the Premier League table and Dubravka has warned that if Newcastle do not adapt to playing with four at the back then they 'cannot change the results' going forward.

"The coach decided to play four at the back and we needed to adapt," Dubravka told Sky Sports.

"We were trying to do our best but I have to say it didn't work.

"We are used to playing five at the back which fits us probably more the last couple of times we played there and were successful.

"But I understand that he is also trying to explain some kind of style that he wants to do it so we need to try to do it. If not we cannot change the results.

"We are trying to do what the gaffer is expecting of us. Unfortunately, it didn't work this time."

The Slovakian international also labelled the performance 'embarrassing' and apologised to Newcastle's 'amazing' travelling support.

"It was not good enough. We know we can do better," the 30-year-old added.

"Unfortunately, on that day, we didn't deserve to take even a point so I agree with all my team-mates that it was just embarrassing.

"I felt so sorry for the fans because they were behind us even when we were 4-0 behind. They still sing and it is amazing to see and feel it.

"Obviously we want to give them something back and after the game I felt so sorry for them because obviously they travelled there to support us.

"I haven't seen that before. I have to say I was so lucky to have such good fans behind me in previous places that I play but this is something special.

"I really appreciate it but I want to give them something back."
