'I have to demand more' - Neal Ardley's verdict on Notts County's 3-1 win at Telford

Neal Ardley felt Notts County's second-half performance at AFC Telford  "wasn't good enough" but said there was still plenty to be encouraged by as the Magpies made it three wins out of three in pre-season.

Notts secured a 3-1 win over their Conference North opponents and took a 1-0 lead into the break courtesy of a thumping strike from Alex Lacey following a corner routine.

An own goal puts Notts further ahead after the break, but a penalty from Aaron Willams reduced the deficit until substitute Wes Thomas made the game safe with a terrific touch and finish.

Notts looked excellent at times, but Ardley felt elements of their second-half display was not up to scratch.

“I don’t think we’ve put together a complete performance in any of the games so far,” he said.

“The first game was what it was in terms of getting minutes into the legs.

“Last week we were poor first half, better second and on Saturday, I thought we were excellent first half, and we had spells in the second when we were good.

“It was hard because of the line-up I had out there, but there was not much play that was good.

“We lost a bit of control and the game became too open for my liking.

“Still, you have to take loads of positives from what we’ve done.

“You can’t just say it’s to be expected because it's pre-season. We are two weeks away from the start of the season.

“I have to demand more and that’s what I said to them.

“I said well done, it was a win, and some great performances. We defended set-pieces really well, but the second half wasn’t good enough.

“But I have to be mindful of the fact that during the second half,  I had a striker playing as a 10, two wingers playing as eights and an eight playing as a four in a diamond."
