‘I have the right to do anything I want. I’m the President of the United States’: Trump now officially mad with power

I’ll say one thing in Donald Trump‘s favor: he doesn’t hide his true feelings. The only problem is they’re utterly terrifying and should chill the blood of every patriotic American, and since his second inauguration, Trump and his White House cronies have been eagerly testing the limits of presidential power.

Now, straight from his own lips, we have the final confirmation that he sees himself as above the laws of the land governing the president’s powers. While discussing sending troops into Chicago, he said:

“I have the right to do anything I want to do. I’m the President of the United States. If I think our country’s in danger – and it is in danger in these cities – I can do it.”

Well. Uh, there you have it. Donald Trump sees himself as having supreme power above the law and can do “anything” without judicial, congressional, or Senate approval. This neatly fits in with all his recent actions, as he ignores various judges’ orders and rules by executive orders from the Oval Office, with Republicans bending to his whim without question and the Democrats putting up as much resistance as a wet paper bag.

Time for a coronation?

This makes Trump the King of America in all but name, able to rule by decree and change the law to suit his whims. Anyone cheering that on is deeply, intrinsically un-American, as it goes directly against the foundations of the nation and shreds the Constitution to confetti.

By design, each branch of the government has checks and balances preventing the other two from gaining the kind of power Trump currently has. As per the Constitution the president is limited by Congress setting spending limits and passing laws for the president to sign or veto. The judiciary is supposed to have the power to declare presidential actions unconstitutional and strike down executive orders or actions that exceed the president’s authority or violate the Constitution.

That system of checks and balances relies on honorable men and women respecting the laws of the land and putting the welfare and rights of the people over the president. Sadly, there’s a desperate shortage of honorable people in DC on both sides of the political aisle, allowing someone like Trump to stroll in and bend the nation to his whims without anybody being able to stop him.

Trump may go down in history as America’s worst president. But he may also be recorded in the history books as King Trump I. Ridiculous? A year ago, I’d have said the same thing, but if it walks like a King, talks like a King and quacks like a King…
