'I have no idea what's happening' – What people thought of BBC drama The Trial of Christine Keeler

The highly-anticipated drama The Trial of Christine Keeler aired last night (December 29) and it's fair to say the reaction has been mixed.

The BBC One show, which was filmed mainly in Bristol, tells the story of the scandalous Profumo Affair of 1963.

The six-part series closely examines Christine Keeler, whose simultaneous affairs with a married government minister and a Soviet diplomat were believed to threaten national security.

The 19-year-old was accused of bringing down a Conservative government during a critical time in Britain's history.

While some people reacted on Twitter to praise the "strong acting" in the programme, others found it difficult to follow.

The first episode jumped back and forth in time to tell the story, and Twitter user Tony Sanderson said: "Is it just me or is this #ChristineKeeler program difficult to understand? It's all over the place!"

Another user, @LauraJArmstrong said: "Well that #christinekeeler drama was difficult to follow ...one year earlier ....one year later ....2 seconds later ...hmmm #bbc #bbcdrama #notforme "

User @x_gn_x said: "I literally have NO IDEA what's happening in #ChristineKeeler. 2 years earlier / 6 months earlier / 1 year earlier."

But others heaped praise on the show. Twitter user, James Browning, said the actors playing Christine and John Profumo were "particularly strong".

The second episode of the series is due to be on BBC One at 9pm tonight (December 30).

Much of the show was filmed in Bristol, with crews based at the Bottleyard Studios in Whitchurch for the 17-week shoot.

While eagle-eyed Bristolians may notice a few familiar locations, many of those used will be hard to recognise as they were transformed to look like London in the 1960s.

One such location is Wills Memorial Building, which was made to look like the House of Commons.

St Nicholas Market, The Strawberry Thief, The Bank Tavern and Bristol Central Library were all also used during the shoot. You can see the full list of Bristol locations used in The Trial of Christine Keeler here.

According to Bristol Film Office figures, more than £16million was generated by filming activity in Bristol in 2018/19. Much of that was at The Bottle Yard Studios, which on its own created 485 jobs.

Stephanie Marshall, Head of the BBC in the West and South West of England, said: “Bristol’s media industry has gone from strength to strength and is now the biggest production hub in the south outside of London.

“TV holds up a mirror to our society and is a powerful way to spread positive messages. But before a single frame ends up on our televisions and phones, it has already provided hundreds of people with work.”
