'I have left such destruction': 28yo facing more jail time over Christmas Eve robbery

A 28-year-old who Tasered a man in a violent Christmas Eve robbery says he acknowledges he has "left such destruction" everywhere he's gone.

Taylem Caldwell fronted the ACT Supreme Court on Monday for a sentence hearing over the incident, which happened at Mawson Club in 2017.

He's previously pleaded guilty to two assault charges - aggravated robbery and possessing a prohibited weapon, being the Taser he used to assault a worker on the night.

Some elements of his court appearance on Monday cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.

CCTV footage shown to the court depicts Caldwell and his co-offender, who is armed with a sawn-off shotgun, arriving at the Mawson Club on Christmas Eve, before Caldwell Tasers a worker multiple times out the front.

Another worker lets the trio in and guides the robbers through the club. At one point, Caldwell's co-offender points the shotgun at patrons in the poker machine area.

In a staff-only room, one of the workers shoves cash from a till and under a counter into a bag before the robbers run off.

Caldwell's barrister Beth Morrisroe on Monday conceded the 28-year-old robbed the club after he'd already spent a stint in a NSW prison.

She said he'd made inroads getting his life on track immediately after his release; trying to start his own business and beginning a relationship before he did the robbery.

Caldwell was unmasked as the Taser-wielding robber after police did DNA testing on a glove tip found in the club's staff-only room, but Ms Morrisroe said he was genuinely remorseful for his actions.

In a letter to the court, Caldwell wrote, "I'm not sure how to apologise to so many victims", and, "I have left such destruction everywhere I go".

Ms Morrisroe said the 28-year-old hoped he would one day be able to work with young people and deter them from crime because, in his own words: "Being in custody is just a demonstration of the fact that you're a loser."

The barrister said that, despite Caldwell having been spotted with prohibited items in jail, he had ultimately been a good influence there. She said another inmate once lit a fire at the prison and Caldwell tried to put it out.

Justice Michael Elkaim said he would sentence Caldwell for the robbery on Thursday.
