'I hate it when people shorten my son's name, but my husband says I'm being ridiculous'

A mum is livid as people always refer to her son using a nickname she does not like - but she has been told to 'let it go' by many online.

It can be difficult to control what people refer to you as, if you have a name that can be easily shortened to something else then people might naturally choose that.

This woman is not happy with her son being referred to as 'Mike' as she wants people to use his real name 'Michael' and has tried to correct many people over it - but feels she needs more support.

In the Reddit post, she added that at a parent's evening recently one of his teachers used the nickname and she corrected him.

She had also checked with her son who doesn't mind what which name he is called.

The woman, who remained anonymous, explained: "I went to a parent's evening recently, and the teacher kept referring to him as 'Mike', even after I'd corrected him at the beginning of the meeting. I was complaininrig to my partner about it, who didn't think it was a big deal, but I wasn't happy that my wishes were basically being ignored.

"My partner then said it was ridiculous to insist on Michael never going by a nickname his entire life, and that it's a losing battle."

She told her partner she wanted more support on this as she would not back down but the pair had to stop talking about to avoid it turning into a row.

"He said I'm being overdramatic, and that I can't control what other people do," she wrote.

"I understand that my partner thinks this is a trivial thing, but in some ways that upsets me even more, as I would hope he would be able to see that this is something that matters to me and would be willing to have my back."

In response, many have sided with the partner and agreed this is not a fight worth fighting.

One person wrote: "Your son doesn't care. Let it go."

Another stated: "To be honest, he probably prefers Mike but doesn't want to tell his mum!"

A third penned: "Even if he does prefer Mike in certain situations, he's indicated he doesn't mind."
