‘I had to shut my eyes!’ Leeds United legend on why he has changed his tune on Gaetano Berardi

Leeds United legend Eddie Gray believes Gaetano Berardi is finally shaking off his reputation as a hot-headed player.

The Swiss defender is in his sixth season at Elland Road but has been sent off on eight occasions during that time.

Despite his questionable disciplinary record, Gray says that Berardi is finally learning how to curb his temper.

Gray pointed to the recent win over Huddersfield Town as the moment he realised Berardi is a changed man.

Speaking to the club’s official channel LUTV, Gray said: “There [were] a few challenges when he was going in after being booked, and I shut my eyes.

"I thought, ‘No!’ - but he pulled back and he did the right thing.

"There comes a time in your career when [you think] ‘I shouldn’t be doing that’, because you’re letting yourself down, the manager down, the team down and the supporters down.

“(But) he has learned well."

Berardi has made 17 appearances for the table-topping Whites this season, starting two of the last three.

And despite being booked against the Terriers, that was his first caution in 13 matches.

Berardi has made a total of 137 league appearances for the Whites since arriving from Sampdoria in 2014.
