‘I had to save myself’: Kim Kardashian finally opens up about her ‘financially unsafe’ marriage to Kanye West

Kim Kardashian is back in the headlines, this time talking about her very public, acrimonious divorce from Kanye West. Kim has previously chosen to remain quiet and move on from that point in her life, but she finally felt ready to share exactly how Kanye’s antics became more concerning as time went by — and how she started feeling unsafe physically, mentally, and even financially around the rapper.

The difference between Kanye and Kim is so razor-thin yet so defining to their public personas that once you notice it, you can’t miss it. They both love attracting attention through controversy — but with the reality star, the goal is always to sell whatever product she’s currently pushing. With Kanye, the goal is actually to create discomfort and concern from fans.

West’s life choices started to make more sense in 2016 when he had difficulty finishing his tour due to mental health problems. He was reportedly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. However, West decided at some point to forgo medical assistance and simply let the mental illness dictate his life decisions. He has since become a shock jock who spends much of his public life saying and doing the most outrageous things you’ve probably ever seen a modern-day celebrity do.

Kim has mostly been quiet about Kanye’s antics. The few times she does address her ex-husband are when he makes claims such as alleging that the Kardashians have blocked him from seeing his children. Kim shared on the Call Her Daddy podcast that sometimes Kanye’s kids go for months without hearing from him at all. She claimed that she actually encourages their kids to spend time with their dad whenever they can.

But in a harrowing section of the podcast, Kim also revealed when she knew their relationship had hit a point of no return. Apparently, after Kanye’s initial mental breakdowns, Kim just wanted to be supportive, but everything changed when Kanye’s wrath turned toward her siblings and mother. Per People Kim said, “Just not feeling safe, you know, not even physically, just like maybe emotionally or even, you know, financially. I would like come home, and we had like five Lamborghinis, and I’d come home and they’d all be gone if he was in an episode. And I’d be like, ‘Oh, wait. Where’s all our cars? Like, my new car?’ And it would be like, oh, he gave them away to all of his friends.”

Ultimately Kim said, “I had to save myself in order to be a better mom for everyone.” Kim also shared that these days she’s more focused on her work — not just her businesses but also her budding acting career in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming TV show All’s Fair. From the trailer, Kim Kardashian seems like she’s finally going to be a lawyer — on Hulu, if nowhere else.

As for her romantic life, that’s something she’s not focusing on right now. Although she did share that her daughter North West keeps encouraging her to get back on the dating scene, she admitted on the podcast that she’s far less patient with relationships these days — because she’s seen just how bad they can get when you ignore red flags. Or red hats.
