'I had ten minutes to fit Oasis' suits for their 1997 tour'

Oasis’s reunion tour is arriving at London’s Wembley Stadium, with thousands of fans donning bucket hats, adidas football shirts and sportswear jackets to see their heroes.

On stage, the freshly-reconciled brothers have also opted for laidback looks - with Liam Gallagher opting for a trademark parka, and Noel keeping it casual in a polo or denim shirt.

But, back in their heyday, the brothers sometimes cut a sharper look on stage wearing items from Savile Row designer Richard James.

Liam and Noel became fans of the label after Noel spotted one of his friends wearing a shirt from the brand in St Tropez.

After asking where it was from, Noel then visited the London store with his younger sibling.

From then on, Toby Lamb helped create numerous looks for the brothers - including the suit Noel wore to meet Tony Blair, and the custom outfit Liam wore to his wedding with Patsy Kensit in 1997.

In Oasis’s prime, Toby had just graduated from Central Saint Martins, and he’s now the design and brand director of the label.

Speaking to The Standard ahead of their London gigs, Toby recalled how he had only ten minutes to do a fitting for the band on their Be Here Now tour in 1997 - before they played Wembley Arena.

On stage, the band wore different white suits, which Toby described as a “Mod, sort of revival aesthetic”.

“We kind of raced over there in the black taxi, myself and our cutter at the time. We arrived and were met by the PR and she led us into Wembley Arena.

“It's completely empty except for the guys on stage.”

Toby was able to watch the band soundcheck for an hour and a half, something he was very grateful for as he didn’t get tickets for either of their two record-breaking gigs at Knebworth the previous year.

“I honestly just couldn't believe it. And then following that, we were invited backstage to fit the suits and join them for a drink. They were really, really sweet, very kind, allowed us to kind of hang out for a little bit,” he said.

“So that was a really unique and special experience.”

He says he saw the band the day after their legendary performances at Knebworth, and that some of them were looking “a little worse” for wear.

“I remember Liam being completely himself, looking great, totally on form,” he added. “But some of the other members of the band were looking a little worse.

“What was nice is that they would often all come in together, you know, as a group, or sometimes it would just be Liam and Noel.”

He says, from his involvement with Liam creating bespoke outfits, that it wasn’t surprising he then started his own clothing company Pretty Green in 2009 (which has since been sold to Frasers Group).

“What was interesting was that Liam, through his choice, decided he wanted to enter, you know, this world of Savile Row tailoring, which was brilliant,” Toby adds.

“I think Liam certainly has always had a great sense of style. he’s always known exactly what he's wanted.”

Richard James’ 2025 autumn-winter collection has been inspired by the 90s, and Toby also explains the lasting impact the band have had on British menswear.

“They resonated at the time with an entire generation, and some of their key looks [which included] parkas, Harrington jackets, the bottom down shirts, polo shirts, adidas Puma trainers - they're all completely timeless.

“They're kind of accessible styles, which are staples in many a man's wardrobe today.

“I think what appealed to a lot of people is that you could look very stylish without sort of trying too hard.

“And I think that still kind of defines sort of British menswear today.”
