"I had no choice": Stranded driver, 30, down to last few miles of fuel slept in car overnight near to Oldham petrol station

A driver told of being stuck outside a petrol station in Oldham overnight as the UK's fuel crisis continued.

Motorists have been queuing up at stations across Greater Manchester on Monday as panic-buying went into a fourth day.

Government ministers and industry bosses have insisted there is no shortage of fuel and called for calm.

But tankers have struggled to keep up with demand with the Petrol Retailers Association suggesting up to 90 per cent of forecourts are running dry.

The Tesco petrol station on Featherstall Road in Oldham was among those closed this morning due to a lack of fuel.

But with staff expecting deliveries early in the morning, drivers were already waiting to fill up.

Among them was Tom McCann, 30, who told the Manchester Evening News how he found himself stuck in Oldham overnight.

He is travelling from West Yorkshire to Wales with his miniature Schanuzer Arnie in a campervan for a week's holiday, but wasn't been able to find anywhere to refuel on Sunday.

"I thought somewhere along the way I'd manage to find some fuel," Mr McCann said.

"But I must have tried twelve different petrol stations and couldn't find any fuel anywhere.

"So in the end I had to make the decision to stop overnight in Oldham because I'd saved enough to get to this fuel station this morning."

"I came about 5.30/6 o'clock and I've just had to wait for the delivery.

"I'm just waiting for them to fill up the diesel then I'll be on my way.

"The tanker's here now - the driver was really nice he came over and told me he's got take his break by law.

"He'll help me get on my way but I just appreciate him letting me know and for letting the fuel station for letting me wait it out.

"I mean I had no choice really I don't have enough fuel to get to another station anyway!"

Tom McCann, a hospital service manager from Wakefield, said he didn't want to turn back and is taking a positive approach to his predicament.

“It is what it is," he added.

“I’m always a positive kind of guy.

“And it wasn’t too bad. It was a nice park where we stayed [overnight] and we went for a nice walk, had some food in the van and got my head down.

Tom eventually filled up and got on his way around 10am.
