'I had a Leeds shirt made with his name on the back!' - Stereophonics frontman's Wayne Rooney joke

Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones has revealed he once gave a Leeds United shirt to then-Manchester United star Wayne Rooney with the striker's name printed on the back as a practical joke.

The Welshman, a noted Whites supporter, revealed the incident occurred in the wake of the pair's famous FA Cup clash in 2010, when Jermaine Beckford handed the visitors a third-round victory at Old Trafford.

The game remains one often cited by fans as a highlight of United's wilderness years following their Premier League relegation, as they took the scalp of Sir Alex Ferguson's then-top flight champions.

Speaking on Absolute Radio after Jones and his bandmates played an album launch show at the city's O2 Academy venue, the singer-songwriter opened up on a chance meeting with Rooney, revealing how the pair made a wager on a Leeds victory pre-match a decade ago.

"He said, before the game, "If they win, I'll give you the shirt off my back"," he said. "Fair play, he came in the box and he gave me the United shirt, which obviously I didn't want anything to do with!"

Jones went on to explain how he countered back with a surprise gift of his own, adding. "So when I went on Football Focus a few months later to do something, he was on there with us.

"I had a Leeds United shirt made with Rooney written on the back and said "Just in case, one day, you need to play for a real club, there you go mate!" I don't know what he did with it!"
