All one woman wanted was a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, but instead, she almost ate a worm. Yuck.
In a video with more than 239,000 views, Kim (@kim_does_makeup_) discussed her recent bad experience purchasing Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. In her clip, she shows her opened package, which had “spider webs” and living creatures inside. “There’s also worms, yeah…” she said.
Not spider webs for Halloween, just a silkworm
As some commenters noticed, it wasn’t a spider that found its way into Kim’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup package. Instead, it was a silkworm.
The Mary Sue recently published an article exploring a different bug catastrophe with a similar story. A person found similarly shaped larvae in Rao’s pasta sauce after the seal broke. Many commenters on that video claimed the bugs could have fallen in while opening the packaging or that the insects were on the outside rather than the inside.
In that video, it appeared as though moth larvae made their way near the Rao’s jar, breaking the seal after laying eggs. In this case, it’s a different type of worm entirely.
“Not spider webs! That’s an inchworm. They are known for making silk webs, normally from trees (still not OK and very gross to find in your candy),” wrote one commenter.
Similarly, it’s possible that the bugs in Kim’s candy were attached to the packaging in some way and ended up inside once opened. Or the bugs may have burrowed and grown in the grocery store rather than the factory.
What is Hershey’s going to do?
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are currently owned by The Hershey Company. The peanut butter chocolate snacks are the largest confectionery brand in the U.S., making up a majority of consumers’ sweet purchases when they check out at grocery stores or gas stations.
“The REESE’S brand accounts for over 47% of all seasonal candy sales within the U.S. convenience store channel, including the top two items in the largest four commercial seasons: Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter,” said Brad Reece in a LinkedIn statement.
With that in mind, many wondered whether the mega-company would notice a post like Kim’s or provide any product discounts considering the silk problem.
Some commenters suggested Kim could sue the Hershey Company. “Sue. Sue right now,” one wrote.
But it’s costly and highly unlikely to succeed if she tries, Kim said. “I’m trying to get the word out there first in hopes that they’ll actually do something about it before I sue,” she said.
It’s possible the company could respond by sending coupons Kim’s way, although she has yet to reach out to Hershey based on her TikTok video.
