'I got through it' Former paratrooper with kidney disease and a brain tumour beats coronavirus

An 87-year-old man has overcome coronavirus, despite having underlying health conditions.

According to Chronicle Live, Ted Sherress, a former paratrooper, was diagnosed with Covid-19 last month.

After he was sent to hospital his family feared the worst - but the great grandad survived the virus and came home after ten days.

He said: "I got through it. I feel all right now. I have been lucky, very lucky."

He joked: "I was looking forward to a cup of tea and a piece of cake when I got home!"

Ted was diagnosed with a brain tumour two years ago, which is benign, but affects his memory and speech and is monitored by doctors.

He also suffers from kidney and heart problems.

Ted's daughter, Kerry, gave up her job as a nurse and midwife to look after her parents.

The 57-year-old said she was devastated to learn her Dad would not be put on a ventilator in hospital due to his age and underlying health conditions.

Kerry added: "If there was someone 20 years old who needed treatment, he would have given it up.

"He has always said that he has had a great life."

Now, he is enjoying the sunshine by the window of his home with his wife, Joyce, by his side- he even posed for a photo with a 'I beat Covid-19' sign.

Kerry said of his miracle recovery: "I just cried. I cried when he got it then I cried when he got better. I thought my heart was going to burst. We have put a photo of him with the sign on the garage.

"He has a lovely sense of humour, he always looks on the bright side, and I think that has helped him through - laughter breaks through all the barriers.

"Save lives and stay at home... and beat it like we have," added Kerry.
