'I felt the house shake' - Homeowner speaks out after car crashes into garden wall in Howdon hit and run

A homeowner has spoken out after a car crashed into her garden wall after colliding with another car.

According to witnesses, the mayhem ensued shortly before 4.30pm after a car drove onto Tynemouth Road in Howdon from a side street.

Police say three vehicles were involved and said they are searching for a driver and a vehicle after a car left the scene before officers had arrived.

The road was blocked off as police and firefighters arrived to help those involved.

A 34-year-old woman who had been driving was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The homeowner at the property where the car crashed said: "The car seems to have spun off the road and smashed into the garden wall.

"I felt the house shake but assumed it must have just been a lorry driving past because it's a very busy road.

"I saw one lady being taken to hospital but thankfully she was conscious."

Officers say they are now hoping to trace one of the drivers who made off after the crash.

The road was temporarily closed while emergency services cleared the debris.

Another resident said: "This road is so busy and it's not the first time we've had an accident like this - a car crashed into the wall of the club just down the road about six months ago."

Witnesses have been asked to speak to police as they gather information about what happened.

Northumbria Police  spokesperson said: “At 4.21pm today, police received a report of a three-vehicle collision on Burn Terrace, Wallsend.

“Emergency services attended and one of the drivers, a 34-year-old woman, was taken to hospital as a precaution with minor injuries.

“One of the vehicles involved had already left the scene, and inquiries are ongoing to trace those involved.

“Churchill Street is currently closed as a clean-up operation continues. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 747 270719 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
