'I felt sick when I found out' - Neighbours speak of sadness as man's body found in Kenton

Residents in Kenton have told of their horror after a man was found dead in the area last night (January 20).

Police confirmed a man was found dead on a patch of grass in the Brigham Avenue area by a person who lives nearby at around 8.20pm.

A large cordon remained in place today and those living in the usually-quiet area said they are shocked.

“I was at home and my brother phoned to tell me that someone had died. I felt sick when I found out,” said one woman, aged 70. “I’ve lived here for 65 years and there’s never been anything like this. We’re frightened.”

Another woman who lives next to the cordon said: “I’ve lived here since I was 16 and I’m almost 60 now. It’s all very sad but I still feel safe here. My children live here and I’m not worried for them.”

Most of those living close to where the man was found, told The Chronicle they felt concerned and saddened by the situation but did not fear for their safety. However some residents were still unaware of exactly what was happening.

“This is the first we’re hearing of it. We didn’t know someone had died,” said one man, who lives just outside the cordon. "It started at around half eight last night with ambulances first with police coming after. But I went to bed at around half 12.”

Sniffer dogs and the specialist search team were seen entering the cordon at around midday today and a heavy police presence will remain throughout the day.

An investigation is under way to determine the circumstances leading to the man’s death.

Detective chief inspector Martin Brooks said: “If you were in this area last night and saw anything that roused suspicion, or believe you have any information that may assist our investigation, please come forward and let us know.

“Our enquiries remain at an early stage and we are keeping an open mind as to what may have occurred. Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could be crucial to our investigation.”

Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police via their website or on 101 quoting log NP-20230120-0995.
