'I feel marginally safer' People in Wales give verdict on new Covid restrictions

New coronavirus restrictions are coming into force from December 27, including the closure of nightclubs and increased social distancing measures.

The new legal restrictions were announced on Thursday night, with First Minister Mark Drakeford explaining the rules in a public briefing on Friday lunchtime. Read the full announcement from Mark Drakeford here.

The announcement has been met with mixed responses across Wales. We asked people in Cardiff if the new Covid regulations will make them feel safer.

Some people felt the new restrictions would make them safer and were happy to see the rules come in.

Britney Chau said she feels safer because nightclubs will be closed (John Myers)

Britney Chau, 20, said: "I do feel safer because nightclubs will be closed and I will personally feel safer at night.

"In terms of Covid, I would feel much safer staying two metres away so I won't be scared about people being too close to me."

When asked if she felt safer following the announcement, Ceri Creffield, 60, said: "Yes, possibly, although I'm not a nightclubber anyway. I think it's safer to err on the side of caution especially since we don't really know what we are dealing with with this new variant as of yet.

"I feel marginally safer."

Others think the First Minister has not gone far enough.

Richard Isaacs, 44, said: "I don't know whether it will necessarily make me feel any safer. I use public transport all the time and services are a bit overcrowded.

"So whilst they may bring in restrictions elsewhere, I don't feel it's been put in place in other places where it should be to keep people safe in the public in general."

There was some concern over people not following the current guidance of wearing a mask indoors. Cities across Wales are busy with Christmas shoppers this week, which some said made them feel unsafe.

Trudy Steadman said it's worrying seeing the number of people out shopping without masks (John Myers)

Trudy Steadman, 60, said: "I don't feel safe at all anyway to be honest. Yes, I will probably feel safer, but I don't go to nightclubs anyway so that won't affect me really.

"It's been quite worrying today seeing the number of people out shopping without masks, particularly younger people."

The closure of nightclubs was met with a positive response from everyone WalesOnline spoke to.

Even regular club-goers seemed to think it was a smart decision.

Toby Roberts said If people are more keen to wear masks then he will feel safer (John Myers)

Toby Roberts, 21, said: "Usually I would be out about twice a week. I'm kind of glad not to have to for the next couple of months, I guess. I will save a bit of money.

"You do what you've got to do. If people are more keen to wear masks then I will feel safer."

On Friday morning, Mr Drakeford revealed that ministers are considering going even further when they meet on Monday and bringing back the "rule of six" governing how many people can meet in venues.

Curbs on the number of people at large events like sports matches are also being considered. See more on that here.

Public Health Wales has confirmed 64 new cases of Omicron variant in Wales, bringing the nation to a total of 159 cases.
