‘I expected my partner to propose at Christmas – I worry he’s changed his mind’

Every couple has different plans when it comes to getting engaged – some will make it a complete surprise, while others prefer to have planned it together before anyone gets down on one knee.

But one woman on Mumsnet has had the excitement ruined for her after she accidentally stumbled across a ring box while tidying up just before Christmas and assumed her partner was planning a grand proposal over the festive period.

The mum-of-one waited with bated breath over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day for her partner to pop the question – but he never did and now the woman is worried she got the wrong idea.

She wrote: “Last week I stumbled across a ring box that was hidden away. I honestly wasn’t snooping, I just accidentally found it while putting something away.

“Obviously I didn’t say anything. But now we’ve had Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day and no proposal.”

The woman admitted she and her partner have already discussed marriage but said they both agreed to “just start planning” their wedding together without bothering with a formal engagement.

But since the past year has been full of ups and downs for the couple, the mum thought her partner had decided to “make a big gesture” instead.

She added: “I’m just baffled generally to be honest, as we’re not that type of couple. We’ve always said that when we want to get married, we’ll just start planning it together.

“We’ve had quite an up and down year with Covid obviously, and my partner got ill in the summer, but we also had our first successful pregnancy, so I thought maybe he’d decided to make a big gesture. But nothing.”

The woman then said she was worried her partner had “changed his mind” and decided not to propose.

Commenters on the post pointed out her partner could be waiting until New Year’s Eve, which is a popular time for proposals, while others were a bit more sceptical – as they said the box might not even contain a ring.

One person wrote: “I know it sounds obvious, but was there a ring inside?”

While another said: “Maybe it's going to be a New Year's Eve proposal.”

The woman responded to several comments as she said she’d previously told her partner she thinks New Year’s Eve proposals are “cliché”.

But the following day, she revealed some extra special news – her partner had skipped the extravagant Christmas proposals in favour of a more relaxed December 28 engagement.

Alongside a picture of her ring, the woman said: “He pointed to the little ledge at the top of our staircase and asked me what was up there. I got a paper bag down from the ledge and gave it to him.

“He took the bag, took the ring box out of it, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

“I did my best surprised face and said yes, then he laughed and said, ‘You found the box in the drawer didn’t you?’ so I confessed everything to him which he found hilarious.

“He said he didn’t have a set day planned, he just wanted to do it one day this week between Christmas and New Year and when I nearly went in the drawer again last night, he knew it would have to be today.”

Awww all's well that end's well! Congrats to the happy couple!
