'I don't see that' - Liverpool's Jordan Henderson makes Trent Alexander-Arnold position prediction

Jordan Henderson doesn't believe Trent Alexander-Arnold will make the permanent switch from right-back to midfield anytime soon.

England boss Gareth Southgate opted to move Alexander-Arnold into midfield for his side’s World Cup qualifying clash against Andorra on Sunday.

Southgate's experiment lasted just 45 minutes before the 22-year-old swapped with Reece James and returned to right back.

Alexander-Arnold's performance earned mixed reviews from supporters on social media, with a number of people saying he was 'wasted' in midfield.

And although Henderson believes his Liverpool teammate will have learned from the experience, he doesn't see him moving into the centre of the pitch permanently.

He said: “Trent did some good things. Obviously it was his first time really in that position so he’s learning all the time, it’s a new experience for him. He did really well.

“We changed personnel a little bit in the second half but it is a great experience for him. Going forward it is a possibility for him and the manager will think that’s good for him.

“But at the minute he is so good at right-back, especially at club level, that I don’t see that changing in the near future.

“But it’s good the gaffer here is looking at it to see what he can add – you have to be very talented to play in any position – but for me, he is so good at the right-hand side delivering crosses that he should stick to that for the time being.”

Speaking on his decision, Southgate told ITV: “We know that he is an outstanding footballer - we’ve wanted to have a look at him in a midfield position for a while.

"He is fabulous with the ball. Today is an opportunity. He’s got to play the role his own way. We want him to play the role his own way, we’re happy for him to drift out wide and deliver those killer balls.

“This season at club level with Harvey Elliott he’s been interchanging quite a lot in the middle.”
