'I don’t know why' - Gary Neville makes Gini Wijnaldum claim ahead of Liverpool exit

Gary Neville has spoken of his surprise at Georginio Wijnaldum’s poor goalscoring record at Liverpool.

The 30-year-old started for Frank de Boer's side in their last-16 Euro 2020 clash against the Czech Republic on Sunday afternoon.

And although the Dutch were heavy favourites heading into the game, two second half goals from Tomas Holes and Patrik Schick secured the Czech’s a famous last-16 win.

Wijnaldum finished the tournament with three goals in four games for the Netherlands, a return that was a far cry from his Liverpool form.

For Jurgen Klopp’s side, he struck just 22 times in 237 matches, with two campaigns of six goals being his best seasonal tallies.

“I don’t know why he would have one in ten with Liverpool and one in three with Holland,” Neville told ITV during their coverage of the game on Sunday.

“I can see why he wouldn’t have one in three, but he played in one of those wide of the three midfield players.

“He always had Fabinho or somebody behind him, so there’s no excuse for him to not get forward.

“Liverpool are going to miss him, though. Klopp always played him. He’s a vital player and he’s one of the very good players the Dutch have.”

Wijnaldum will become a Paris Saint-Germain player when his Reds contract ends this week, after he opted to move to the French side instead of Barcelona.

And former Dutch star Nigel De Jong believes Liverpool might have got more out of Wijnaldum had Klopp tried him in a similar position to the one he plays for his country.

"If you look at the position he plays for Holland, he plays a more advanced role and he has the opportunity to score more goals," said De Jong, who was also on punditry duty on ITV.

"That was the difference between how he played for Liverpool and when he played for Holland.

"He is one of the most important players for Holland and even has more goals than [Marco] Van Basten."
