'My neighbours complain about my Christmas lights, but I won't take them down'

A man found himself locked in an argument with his neighbours - who said he'd put up his Christmas lights too soon.

Sharing his story anonymously, the man said that he lived in an area managed by a housing association and they had very specific rules about when festive lights could be put up.

But he wanted his house to look festive, and as his property wasn't directly managed by the association he decided to put them up as early as he fancied - but soon the complaints rolled in.

He said that a member of the housing association came round to complain, and soon the pair were arguing as they couldn't see eye to eye.

What do you think about the festive lights police? Let us know in the comments...

Taking to Reddit, he said: "The woman who I deal with the most when I upset them came by on November 30 and told me my lights were against the policy and that I was not allowed to have as many lights up as I do.

"I told her that we have been over this before, that I am in no way beholden to their policies and don’t care.

"I told her that my nieces and nephews loved lights so I would be putting up a fair amount.

"I also told her that I didn’t care about their rules that the lights could only be on during certain hours, and that once done putting them up on the 30th I would likely turn them on and leave them on till Christmas.

"She told me that me breaking the rules upset other members and that I should respect their rules even if I don’t follow them because I technically live in the neighborhood.

"She offered me a flyer which apparently had their rules for lights.

"I tossed it in the trash and told her to just get off my property. I probably could’ve entertained some of what she asked but I’ve just had enough of them."

After sharing his story on Reddit, other users seemed to unanimously agree with him and said he should feel free to put up festive decorations if he wants to.

One said: "I'm so tired of unhappy people trying to ruin Christmas for others. I guarantee you will bring way more cheer and happiness than you will upset people.

"Your neighbours' kids probably love the lights too!"

And another wrote: "Sounds like it simply upsets her. I'd put up extra lights to spite the housing association. They sound like a bunch of grinches."

Then a third added: "Make sure you leave them up at least a week after their imposed deadline then leave just one strand up for several weeks after that just to remind them you could keep those lights up all year if you wanted."
