'I do believe the players understood it' - How Bristol City were 10 minutes from going out of business

The latest Subs Bench has dropped and this week's edition takes a look behind the curtain of one of the most memorable days in the club's history, albeit not in the conventional sense.

February 3, 1982 may not evoke the same memories of promotion seasons, cup joy, great goals or magical matches but it was equally as important in the overall story of Bristol City Football Club.

It was on that day when a meeting was held at the Dragonara Hotel in Redcliffe and directors, players and the PFA convened to try and save City from falling into the financial abyss.

And as former City chairman Les Kew reveals, negotiations were tense and went to the wire as City came perilously close to going out of business before eight players agreed to rip up their contracts, change their lives for the worse but save the future of the club.

"It's a day that will never go from my memory," Kew said. "What was so difficult about it was those players were my friends.

"I had followed, watched and almost worshipped them but you have these choices ito make in life where what is important, your own emotional feelings to certain people or the overall picture of saving the club?

"We had to make those decisions. I do believe the players understood that it was one of those necessary things to take the club forward."

A City fan since birth, given his family connections, Kew also touches on his history with the club from the terraces to the boardroom, the rebirth through the late 1980s, including the 1986 Frieght Rover Trophy final and his take on the current Robins team.
