"I didn't know where I was" - teen recalls terrifying moment she woke from coronavirus coma

A teenager has recalled the moment she woke up from a 12-day coronavirus coma on her 16th birthday.

Marisa Bappoo was joined by mum Anita and sister Reyana on Good Morning Britain and told hosts Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid that she "didn't know where she was" when she opened her eyes to balloons in Southampton's ICU unit.

Marisa revealed - in the video above - that she spent 11 days in intensive care as her whole family contracted the virus, but mum Anita noticed her daughter was particularly ill.

Apart from mild asthma Marisa had no underlying health concerns.

"Marisa's temperature was sky-high and she had a cough as well," Anita explained. "At this point we knew that it wasn't normal so we had to call 999."

Marisa was rushed to Basingstoke Hospital before being sent to Southampton's ICU unit when doctors suspected Covid-19.

The 15-year-old was then sedated and put on a ventilator which mum Anita described as a "nightmare."

Marisa explained the lengths her family and NHS staff went to to make her feel comfortable.

"So I woke up on the Monday and I just remember there was birthday banners around my room, so I knew it was my birthday," she said.

"My dad had emailed them pictures of my family and me to look at on my window so when I woke up I would feel more comfortable around the doctors.

"As I woke up, the doctor just came over and held my hand and told me everything was going to be ok. But I was really frightened at the time because I literally didn't know where I was."

Doctors and nurses who helped the teen also appeared on the show via video link in emotional scenes as mum Anita thanked them for "letting me have my daughter back"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6AM.
