'I didn't believe it' Nottinghamshire 'jab hero' recalls moment Boris Johnson gave her shout out

A Nottinghamshire vaccine worker says she 'couldn't believe it' when she was praised by Boris Johnson on national television.

Kim Kirk, the operational Lead for the vaccine hub at the King's Mill Hospital, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, was labelled a "jab hero" by the Prime Minister during a press conference on Wednesday evening (December 15).

In the address to update the nation on the latest Covid and vaccination figures, Mr Johnson said: "Jab heroes like Kim Kirk, leading the King's Mill hospital vaccination hub in Mansfield, who was asked a year ago to do it for four weeks, and has been doing it ever since - 180,000 jabs and counting."

Speaking on Lorraine this morning (Thursday, December 16), Ms Kirk said she had "no idea" she would be mentioned.

“It was a huge surprise," she said.

"I was actually in the vaccination hub with colleagues, my phone messages were pinging and it was actually my husband who called to say ‘you’ve had a mention from Boris’. And I still didn’t believe it.

“It’s great but just to be clear this is a massive team effort, nationally and locally. To lead this team every day is an absolute privilege. They’re hard working and determined, they always dig deep so I’m the lucky one really to be part of it all at King’s Mill Hospital.

“The staff talk about a real sense of purpose, we’re all in this together and really proud of being a part of history."

In a plea to get more people boosted, Ms Kirk added: “Our message to those who want to get a booster vaccine is to book an appointment using the national booking system, we have thousands of appointments available across the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire system, especially at our King's Mill Hospital Hub and the Mansfield Vaccination Centre and we are working hard to bring more appointments online every day.”
