'I did my last-minute Christmas shopping at a Leeds petrol station'

There's last-minute Christmas shopping and then there's last-minute Christmas shopping.

The real adrenaline junkies are not satisfied with buzzing around Leeds city centre on Christmas Eve - they wait until the shops have closed.

If you are one of those daredevils you could find yourself flying into a petrol station this evening, jogging the place aisle by aisle as your eyes scan for a hint of thoughtfulness among the meal deals, magazines and antifreeze.

Well, at the risk of spoiling the nerve-jangling fun I have done a quick reccy for you.

I headed to the BP station in Morley, just off the M62 at junction 27, to see what I could get at the Spar shop there.

I set myself a limit of £20 and a target of buying three half-decent presents - one for a child, one for a partner and one for a parent.

For kids, there was a surprising amount of choice. I found myself actually wondering what this fictional child might be into as I flip-flopped between board games, cuddly toys, a space gun and tonnes of plastic things that would be fun for half an hour after Christmas dinner.

In the end, it came down to what I would enjoy playing with most and a skittles game was narrowly edged out by the strangely familiar board game, 'Who Is It?' (£7.99) in which players must Guess Who is on their opponent's card.

I think I was swayed by the yellow label boasting, "English instructions included".

Although I was a bit uncomfortable when I realised all of the characters were apparently ethnically white, save for Neil, who is orange.

It was much harder to get a decent gift for a partner or a parent.

For a partner I had to go for chocolates, there really wasn't anything else even remotely romantic.

Lindt's Master Chocolate Collection (£5) includes ten recipes in 18 delicate little chocolates.

I thought about pairing it with some plastic handcuffs from the toy section but this would have pushed me over budget so I'll just have to return in February.

I thought about doubling up on chocolates for a parent's gift but endeavored to think slightly more out of the box.

That left me too remotely viable options; car stuff or kitchen stuff.

Kitchen felt slightly more thoughtful to me and I managed to pick up a lovely alluminium non-stick pan - because nothing says Merry Christmas like, "suitable for all hobs except induction".

My haul came in just under budget at £19.98 and if this was a competition run I could have been in and out in less than 10 minutes.

Surprisingly decent, I'd say.
