There is a great line in today's serialisation in the Daily Mail of former Mirror editor Piers Morgan's "secret diary", the Insider, which is published next month.
It is in an entry dated May 14 1998 in which Morgan is furious with Tony Blair's then media chief Alastair Campbell. Morgan had planned for the then US president Bill Clinton to write a piece for the Mirror about the Northern Ireland peace process urging people to vote for the Good Friday Agreement.
Campbell said this is possible, given Mr Clinton's lack of time, the Mirror had to write it and get it signed off by Mr Clinton. Morgan agrees and gets his political editor to write it but then the piece appears in the Sun under the headline "President writes for the Sun".
A furious Morgan rings Campbell. Morgan writes in his diary that: "More profanities spilled from my lips until he silence me with the immortal confession: OK, Piers, I did it - but please understand that I did it for peace."
Alastair Campbell - man of peace.
