'I demanded my sister-in-law change her baby name choice - I want it and I'm annoyed'

Choosing your bundle of joy's moniker is a really tough decision, and once you've decided something, often you'll follow through with it as it's your number one choice. But what would you do if you found out that a family member had the exact same idea as you? And they had the same surname?

One mother-to-be was left devastated when she realised that her sister-in-law had named her baby the moniker that she was hoping to name her baby. But rather than accepting it graciously and choosing another, she admitted that she demanded her sister-in-law rename her baby something else.

She took to Reddit to try and justify her actions and to give some backstory. She wrote: "My husband's younger sister has 3 kids (11M, 5M, 3F). Her oldest son is named after her grandfather and her daughter was given a name that is inspired by her grandmother's nickname. The sister herself is named after that same grandmother.

"My sister-in-law does not have a great relationship with my husband and me. On the day of my wedding, she was visibly pregnant and as many family members hadn't previously known she was, it was heavily talked about, which I found quite upsetting."

She then explained that she had a three-year-old son, and she and her husband "made a point" to give him a name that had no relation to either family

She did say though, that if she had a daughter, she "wanted to give her a particular name", but was left "distraught" when her niece was born and she found out "they had given her the name."

She continued: "The next week when we were able to visit the baby, I mentioned to my sister-in-law that I had really liked that name and inquired if she would change it.

"She laughed thinking I was joking but I told her I was serious and that I would really appreciate it if she would change it. She didn't even consider it and told me no. We ended up leaving not long after because I was quite upset.

"My husband texted her after we left telling her it was rude of her to not consider what we were asking. She never replied but my husband got into an argument with their older brother a few days later about it and told us we were being weird to even ask, especially because we didn't know if we would have a daughter."

But she said she did have a daughter, and she went ahead and used the name anyway, despite the fact it's "the same name", with her brother-in-law calling them "disrespectful" and "harsh" on both the girls, and her sister-in-law as the girls have the same surname, and they're almost the same age.

In the comments, people were baffled at why she would've been so desperate to name her daughter the same name.

One wrote: "Naming your child the same is fine but actually asking her to change the name of her child? Jesus, you're the a**hole."

Another said: "You're the a**hole 100 percent who goes to a new mother and asked them to change the name. Then gets mad and disrespectful when they don't. I don't know who has more audacity or entitlement you or your husband.

"You know honestly, the sister-in-law is going to receive pity from family and friends because you copied her name.

"Your daughter is going to be the one who gets harassed because her cousin had the name first. So she is the one who is going to hate her name. She will wonder if her parents didn’t care enough to even think of a name besides copying her aunt."

Someone else wrote: "While I don't think she’s necessarily the a**hole for naming her child that I do think it is very inconsiderate. Having someone related to you with the exact same name as you around the same age as you has the potential to cause sooooo many headaches for that kid."
