Staggering levels of sugar in your favourite cereal - and what comes out best

Some most popular cereals contain a staggering amount of sugar, analysis shows.

The Mirror took a look at the sugar content of Weetabix, Rice Krispies, Cornflakes, Coco Pops, Cheerios, and Kellogg's Crunchy Nut.

It comes as Kellogg's announced plans to sue the government in court over new rules that would prevent some of its cereals from being prominently displayed in stores because of their high sugar content.

Kellogg's claims the rules fail to consider the nutritional value of the milk added to the product.

But the government said the new rules would help tackle childhood obesity.

While it's no secret that many cereals on the market aren't the healthiest option when it comes to kickstarting our day, many of us turn to them anyway.

Each comparison looks at the sugar levels per 100g of cereal - so all you need to do is work out whether your favourite cereal is worth the sugar rush.

Rice Krispies

A classic in many family homes, Rice Krispies score incredibly low on this list, with just 7.9 grams of sugar per 100g of cereal, according to Good To Know.

The rice puffs aren't coated in chocolate and don't come with any other fancy flavours on top, so their relatively low sugar content isn't too surprising.

Cheerios

Cheerios come in all sorts of flavours and varieties, but I looked into your bog-standard Nestle Cheerio for this one.

Again, I was surprised by the amount of sugar in 100g of Cheerios - as personally I've always found them a bit bland, and would have imagined they'd score similarly to Rice Krispies.

But alas, I've been informed there's actually 20.9 grams of sugar per 100 grams of cereal - making it one of the higher scorers on this list.

Cornflakes

Kellogg's Cornflakes are another classic, and just like their equally as plain-tasting pals over at Rice Krispie, there's very little sugar content in them either.

In fact, only 0.1 gram separates Rice Krispies from Cornflakes, with the flake shapes coming in at an even 8 grams.

But is the low sugar content worth it for the relatively bland taste? Only you can be the judge of that.

Kellogg's Crunchy Nut

Okay, I'll admit, this one took me by surprise.

Despite Kellogg's Crunchy Nut managing to avoid the pitfalls of being smothered in chocolate, the cereal has a staggering 35 grams of sugar per 100 grams of cereal - meaning over a third of a portion is just pure sugar.

I imagine this comes from the honey, so you'll have to judge for yourself whether that's better than the artificial sugar found in other cereals.

Coco Pops

The classic of many breakfasts as a child, Coco Pops was another one that took me by surprise - this time though, for a different reason.

I had gone into this thinking the chocolate-covered puffs would be the worst offenders by far, especially when you take into consideration the glorious chocolate milk they leave behind.

But they actually find themselves in the middle of the pack at 17 grams of sugar per 100 grams of cereal.

Weetabix

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Weetabix is the healthiest cereal on this list when it comes to sugar content.

In fact, there are just 4.4 grams of sugar in a 100g portion of the iconic fibre-packed cereal.

The downside, however, is that the sugar content will of course skyrocket when you dump a few heaped tablespoons of pure sugar on top to make them actually taste of anything.

Verdict

Overall, the best cereal for your health has got to be Weetabix - providing you're careful with whatever toppings you choose to add.

The worst offender on my list was Kellogg's Crunchy Nut, which stormed ahead of all competition with a massive 14 grams more sugar than the closest competitor, the humble Cheerio.
