I can’t stop thinking about Serena Williams’ kitchen island – the most unorthodox, geometric design that’s continuing to set trends 2 years later

Serena Williams.

Serena Williams is renowned for achieving firsts, both on the tennis court and in her personal life. Acknowledged as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, she held the world No. 1 singles ranking by the Women's Tennis Association for an impressive 319 weeks and consistently finished her professional years in the top spot.

However, a closer look at her Miami home reveals she's also a trailblazer in interior design. The Michigan-born star's kitchen, a neutral design lover's dream, was naturally styled by V Starr-her sister Venus's luxury design firm.

While the space (seen below) includes premium elements like Officine Gullo appliances and Caesarstone countertops, its geometric kitchen island and dining table are what truly command attention.

We first wrote about Serena Williams' kitchen island back in May 2023, and, two years later, it remains one of the most experimental ideas we've ever seen here on the celebrity style team.

This dramatic island-turned-dining table masterfully contrasts materials, merging dark wood with bright white marble in sharp, rectangular shapes. It's a highly unconventional piece, but designers predict that pieces like this will soon top kitchen trends and island trends, especially as the fall season inspires homeowners to cozy up and refresh their interiors with statement pieces.

Experts observed an increase in demand for these bold shapes among clients, and that continues to this day.

Amy Youngblood, the owner and lead designer of Amy Youngblood Interiors, notes, 'We are seeing more uniquely shaped furniture as people are wanting to lean away from normal and typical.'

'Dining tables are a fun way to switch things up and add some more character to your home, and geometric-shaped bases can turn your table into a sculptural yet functional art piece.'

If you're thinking of following Serena's example, Amy says there are some lessons to bear in mind: 'Consider how it will affect the space in the long term. The geometric base should be the focal point of the room. It’s certainly more exciting than a plain piece.'

This striking kitchen island or table style isn't for the timid, but it's a design risk that instantly adds distinctive visual appeal to any kitchen-a quality highly sought after in modern design, especially as homeowners prepare their spaces for holiday gatherings.

Moe Solof, a kitchen specialist at Fabuwood, echoes this sentiment. 'Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to personalize their living spaces,' he says.

'Unconventional islands and dining tables offer an opportunity to showcase individual style and preferences, setting their homes apart.'"

Moe has observed a significant trend toward more personalized kitchen designs, something Serena's island perfectly exemplifies.

He believes in the value of this design choice, saying: 'Investing in geometric islands, unusual islands, and dining tables can be a wise decision for homeowners seeking to enhance their living spaces' visual appeal, functionality, and overall value,' he says. 'As a kitchen specialist, I highly recommend considering these unique designs for future projects.'

This island has inspired us for over two years, and we expect it will continue for many more in the future. Wouldn't you agree?
