'I can't stand my name - clearly my nasty parents want me to be bullied for life'

A woman has turned her back on her parents for condemning her to a "lifetime of problems" because of her name. She explained how her parents wanted to make sure she stood out in a crowd and decided to give her a "unique" name to help accomplish this.

However, she claims it has negatively impacted her life and made her resent them for it. Taking to Reddit, she said: "My scumbag parents named me Qur'stylle, and my whole life I have gotten 'What language is your name originated from?', 'What country are you from?', and people butchering its pronunciation, for obvious reasons.

"I have always told people to just spell it as Chrystal and my parents, mainly my mum, would take huge offense to it - and would email my teachers every year to make sure they pronounce my name correctly. My mum even grounded me once because I told people to just save my name as Chrystal in their contacts."

She went on to explain how she recently changed her legal name to Chrystal, not wanting to live with the burden any longer.

But this didn't go down well with her parents who threatened to cut her off for doing it.

"Having this bulls*** spelling and having to correct everyone everyday was annoying as hell," she added.

"Your name impacts how people see you, much of it is subconscious, and having these bulls*** spellings is not good.

"Before anyone met me, they would always think I'm some spoiled brat when that isn't true at all.

"My mum lost her mind and started crying and threatened to cut me off for doing this.

"She said I betrayed her and our family. I'm pretty sure I'm in the right but I need a sanity check here.

"I told my mum off for causing me all these problems in my life and not supporting me and taking my complaints into consideration over my own name."

While most users agreed she did the right thing by changing her name, others urged her to stay away from her parents "until it blows over".

One user said: "Your mum thinks you're her possession to show off. She picked that name for the same reason people get their sportscars in bright red - 'Look at this awesome thing I own!".

"Not only are you in the right for wanting a normal name, it's good of you to get out from under your mum's influence."

Another user added: "She gets to pick your name when you're a kid. You're an adult now, and you are allowed to dislike what she picked and change it.

"She's allowed to be hurt by that. She is not allowed to threaten you for making adult decisions."

A third user said: "If my kid hated their name so much that they changed it, I definitely would feel terrible for doing that to them.

"It sounds like a vanity thing on your mother's part. Embrace your new name and maybe take a break from your family, too."
