'I can’t see it' - Derby County captain Wayne Rooney casts doubt over new return date

Derby County's Wayne Rooney doubts the English football season will resume next month.

And he admits he wouldn't be surprised if it takes until the end of the year to complete this season.

Nottingham Forest were scheduled to face Rooney and their arch-rivals, the Rams, at Pride Park on April 4 until the campaign was suspended until at least April 30 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The date set for the leagues restarting is April 30 so, for the moment, we have to prepare as though we’ll be back playing then," he wrote in the Sunday Times.

"I can’t see it, to be honest, but it’s good the Premier League and EFL set the April 30 guideline because at least it gives everyone a bit of stability and something to aim for.

"It wouldn’t surprise me if finishing the season takes until the end of 2020."

The Football Association has agreed the current season can be "extended indefinitely", which is a boost for Forest in their bid to win promotion to the Premier League.

They are currently in fifth place in the Championship, with nine matches left to play.
