'I can't believe it!' - Arsenal fans are divided as Edu makes major Granit Xhaka decision

Granit Xhaka has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal despite mass speculation over his future throughout the summer.

The Switzerland international, who enjoyed a fine Euro 2020 campaign for his country, looked set to join AS Roma earlier in the summer, but negotiations over a switch to the Italian capital collapsed, football.london understands.

Now, in a sensational turn of events, Xhaka has signed a new contract with the Gunners that will keep him at the club until 2025, football.london can confirm.

Arsenal supporters, when taking to Twitter, are divided on the news, but the majority of the reaction seems to be negative.

Earlier in the month, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta confirmed Xhaka, who has been a staple under the manager since taking over around 18 months ago, would be staying with the north London club.

"Xhaka is staying," Arteta said following Arsenal's pre-season friendly defeat to Chelsea recently.

"He wanted to play. He is a key player for us."

The Swiss midfielder was asked about his future at the Emirates Stadium earlier in the summer, while on international duty, and remained very coy on the subject.

"There are always rumours as soon as the transfer market opens but I don't want to talk about my future," he told a press conference ahead of Switzerland's match against Wales.

"I want to keep that until the end of the tournament and what happens afterwards you will then get to know about it.

"Everything else doesn't distract me. I'm fit and motivated and I'm looking forward to doing a lot of things.

"This tournament is very important to the team and to Switzerland and we want to show it with good performances here."
