Errors in Personal Information and Filing Details
Tax refunds are often delayed due to simple information errors, according to ChatGPT.
“Misspelled names or incorrect Social Security numbers that do not match Social Security Administration records can trigger manual review,” ChatGPT explained. “Using the wrong filing status or entering an incorrect bank account or routing numbers for direct deposit can also slow processing or cause refunds to be rejected.”

Income, Math and Credit-Related Mistakes
According to ChatGPT, calculation errors on income, deductions or tax credits commonly delay refunds because the IRS must correct them.
“Refunds are also slowed when taxpayers forget to report income from freelance work, side jobs, interest, or dividends, or when reported amounts do not match W-2 or 1099 forms on file,” ChatGPT said. “Claiming credits or dependents without meeting eligibility rules, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, often results in additional verification.”
Filing Method, Timing and Compliance Issues
“Refunds may be delayed if required forms or schedules are missing or if a paper return is unsigned,” ChatGPT explained.
Additionally, the chatbot highlighted that filing too early before receiving all tax documents can lead to corrections that slow processing, while paper filing generally takes much longer than e-filing.
“Identity verification issues or outstanding debts such as back taxes, child support, or federal student loans can also cause refunds to be delayed or reduced,” ChatGPT said.
