Where in this country spanning approximately 3.8 million square miles should middle-class families live to make their incomes stretch the most in 2026? GOBankingRates posed the question to ChatGPT, which named five cities. GBR then sussed out each suggestion — finding the annual cost of living as compared to the national average, typical home value and the median household income.
Madison, Wisconsin
- Median household income: $76,983, per U.S. Census Bureau
- Average home price: $415,530, per Zillow
- Cost of living, as compared to the national average: 4% higher, per Payscale
Though the cost of living in Madison, Wisconsin, is a bit higher than the national average, ChatGPT makes an argument for it as a kind of middle-class utopia, describing it as having “excellent schools, low unemployment and a community oriented around education and healthcare.”

Life in Boise, Idaho, is also not as cheap as it comes, but it’s “affordable compared with coastal tech hubs,” according to ChatGPT, which pointed to the city’s “strong job growth, outdoor lifestyle and family-friendly neighborhoods.”
Overland Park, Kansas
- Median household income: $103,838

Pittsburgh

- Average home price: $230,723
- Cost of living, as compared to the national average: 2% lower
Looking for major metropolis vibes on a middle-class paycheck? ChatGPT suggested you consider Pittsburgh, citing it as “among the most affordable U.S. cities to buy a home, with low mortgage burden relative to income.” Indeed, home prices here are well below the national average of $357,275, averaging under $230,000, per Zillow.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
- Median household income: $67,859
- Average home price: $204,214
- Cost of living, as compared to the national average: 10% lower
Cedar Rapids is by far the least expensive of ChatGPT’s recommendations for places where middle-class families can stretch their income in 2026. The chatbot described it as having “very low cost of living and strong community feel and safe neighborhoods.” And a house for $200,000? It’s certainly a place the middle class should consider as they look to thrive in 2026.
