I am thinking about buying an e-reader to take on a trip to Europe so I don’t have to carry a pile of books

Facing a four-week trip around Europe, I’m considering buying an e-reader to replace a heavy pile of books. Could our iPad do the job, or is there a better option – ideally one that will take a few bashes? The Kindle’s the obvious choice, but is there an equally good non-Amazon option?
