'I am so ashamed I said what I said.' Man convicted of hate crime for berating woman wearing Puerto Rican shirt sentenced to probation, community service

CHICAGO _ A Des Plaines, Ill., man found guilty of a hate crime for harassing a woman wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt was sentenced Monday to two years of probation and 200 hours of community service and was also forbidden from going to any Cook County Forest preserves for two years.

Timothy G. Trybus, 63, was found guilty last month of a hate crime for verbally berating a woman in a Cook County Forest preserve in 2018.

A cell phone video of Trybus berating the then 24-year-old woman went viral, not just because of the verbal assault, but also because a Cook County Forest Preserve Police officer stood by and watched for a lengthy period before getting involved. The officer later resigned.

On Monday Trybus' voice cracked with emotion as he apologized for his drunken actions.

"I am so ashamed I said what I said to that lady," Trybus said. "It was a terrible mistake that day."
