'I ain't no criminal': Mum-of-five blames Tesco for 'humiliating' shopping trip to buy Christmas turkey

A mum-of-five has vowed never to step foot in Tesco again after a trip to buy her Christmas turkey ended in humiliation.

Claire Harrison, 31, says she dropped by to do some shopping with her husband, auntie and mum when things went horribly wrong.

She made her way round the store as normal, before walking over to the self-service checkouts, Plymouth Live reports.

But after scanning all their food and paying, staff raced over, demanding the family produce their receipts as proof of payment before leaving the shop, Claire alleged.

"I felt so humiliated with all them customers in there," the mum fumed.

"I have been going there for the last eight years and I will never, ever stop foot in there again.

"I am a 31-year-old mum with five kids, I ain't no criminal."

The drama unfolded at a Tesco superstore in Plymouth last Wednesday.

"It was me, my mum, husband and auntie. We got some shopping and went over to the self service tills," Claire said.

"My auntie was on one till, my husband on another and my mum on the next one over.

"My auntie bought her shopping and paid for it, and my husband, who I was stood with - did the same.

"Then, one of the members of staff in the self-checkout area went over to my auntie and said; 'have you paid for that?' And she said, yes I have."

Claire says the ordeal unfolded at Tesco (Plymouth Live)

"They went around our shopping bags, ripped the receipt out of my auntie's shopping bag," Claire added.

"With my husband, they ripped the receipt straight out of his hand."

Claire said the group had gone to Tesco in part so her mum could pick up a turkey ahead of Christmas Day.

She said the birds are 'overpriced' in Morrisons - where they're going for £30 each.

She said they snapped up a £20 turkey in Tesco, deciding against the slighter cheaper £16 one because it looked 'dented'.

Claire claims her mum and auntie were rudely approached by staff who then demanded receipts off them (Plymouth Live)

"My mum, she paid for her stuff on her bank card and bought a turkey for Christmas separately," Claire explained.

"They asked her for her receipt and she didn't know what she had done with it.

"She thought she might have left it in the shopping trolley. She found it and it was yanked out of her hand.

"There was no apology, nothing."

Claire says the checkout area was packed full of shoppers - but no-one else was confronted.

Shocked and enraged, Claire confronted staff before storming out with her family after proving they had actually paid.

She says she's now awaiting a phone call at home from Tesco head office explaining their actions.

"I stood my ground," Claire said. "I wasn't having them treating my auntie, husband and mum like that.

"I said; 'who the hell do you think you are?'

"They intimidated and humiliated us in front of lots of other customers. I did get really angry, so did my auntie."

Tesco has been approached for comment about the incident.
