'I absolutely hate when people ask to split the bill - I can't afford it and it's unfair'

Diners understand that it's always an awkward situation at the end of a meal when the bill is placed on the table. Do you split equally? Do you pay your part? These burning questions can then leave controversy arising at the table.

In a bid to keep costs down, a woman admits that she specifically chooses 'cheaper options' at restaurants so she can afford the end bill. However, it's always an awkward predicament when diners ask her to split the bill equally.

Taking to popular forum Mumsnet, the anonymous woman admitted that she 'absolutely hates' it when she's asked to split the bill.

Captioning the post, she wrote: "To hate splitting bills at restaurants?"

The woman explained: "We socialise a fair bit but do not have a high income. We do this by being careful about how we spend our money.

"So I absolutely hate it if, in a restaurant at the end of the night, someone says forcefully we should just split the bill.

"No! I know it is easier. But myself and my husband have chosen cheaper options so we can afford this."

"And it's always people who have spent loads who say this," she added.

Since posting, the woman's post voicing her concern has raked in over 400 comments to date - with several people sympathising with the Mumsnet user.

One person wrote: "Ask for separate bills when you order. Make it clear when you agree to go for tea that you're not splitting the bill by the number of people, but by what was ordered. Then it's just as easy as all of your food is already on your bill."

Meanwhile, a second said: "That's why I don't go out for meals with people. Someone always takes the p***! And I don't drink or eat meat so it's never fair.

"If you do it you need to say before the meal so everyone knows before they have a drink" They added.
