Hydro stars help seal win in memorial print competition

Photographers at a camera club in North Lanarkshire recently took part in a competition set up in memory of a former member.

The Motherwell Photographic Society snappers produced their best shots in the Hugh Shaw Memorial Print Competition.

Hugh was a member of the society for many years and his particular passion and skill was making and displaying prints of his photographs. He passed away after developing a serious illness but his family wanted to preserve his legacy within the club.

They donated the Hugh Shaw Memorial Print Trophy for a competition to be run every year, exclusively for the printed image and not, as it would have then been, slide images.

Under competition rules, each club member is able to submit up to five printed images for scoring by an external judge. As with everything else in this year of compromise, it was agreed that digital images could be submitted in lieu of actual prints for the competition.

A total of 39 images were submitted by eight members, and Chris Bonnington from Carluke Camera Club judged the entries.

The competition winner was Dominic Smith with Mysterious, a creative image of the SSE Hydro in black and white with the moon and stars behind it. William Graham took second place and Brian Saberton took third.

Motherwell Photographic Society normally meets on a Thursday evening at 7.30pm in Holytown community centre but until further notice, all meetings will be conducted virtually. Anyone with an interest in photography, no matter their level, is welcome to attend.
