Hyderabad: Woman picks up bag at garbage dump, dies in blast

HYDERABAD: A mysterious low-intensity blast in a road-side garbage dump killed a woman at Anand Nagar in Mailardevpally on Sunday morning. The woman, who suffered burns in the blast while collecting waste from the garbage, died on the spot.

Police said a couple — Susheela and Rangamuni, who are ragpickers — reached a spot in an auto-rickshaw to pick useful plastic material from the dump. Around 8.45 pm, while the man was standing near the autorickshaw, his wife started collecting plastic material, which they sell it. She held on to a plastic bag, which was filled with an unknown material.

“It appears that she hit the plastic cover against the floor or some other object. This led to the blast. She died on the spot with bleeding injuries,” deputy commissioner of police (Shamshabad) R Jagadishwar Reddy told TOI.

The couple are residents of Nandanavanam in LB Nagar and natives of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. Everyday, they used to travel to Mailardevpally to collect the industrial waste, found strewn on the roadside.

Police were verifying CCTV footage to know who dumped the unknown combustible material.

Clues Team reached the spot and collected samples to analyse the material that caused the accident. Luckily, her husband who was standing a little distance away was unhurt. On hearing the blast, locals reached the spot in large numbers and alerted police.
