Hyderabad residents collect mails as post office faces staff crunch

HYDERABAD: Over 4,000 residents in Hyderabad’s Hi-Tec City have a peculiar problem at hand.

With India post authorities at its Kondapur office refusing to deliver mails, citing shortage of manpower, residents are physically collecting their letters and parcels from the post office for the past seven months

In the last few years, Kondapur and its neighbourhood has expanded significantly with more number of colonies and gated communities mushrooming. Residents of many of these localities such as Spring Valley, Shilpa Valley, Central Park-2, Kantivanam Colony among others rue that they are not getting letters and articles delivered at their doorstep from Kothaguda post office. In many cases, residents are asked to collect the parcels by themselves.

“My house is 1.5 km away from the post office. Yet, I have to physically go and collect the parcels. The issue has been persistent for almost a year wherein the postman refuses to deliver the letters and articles at the doorstep,” said Pavan Kumar, president of Spring Valley Plot Owners Association.

From not having the area under its jurisdiction to shortage of manpower, residents are made to run from pillar to post to get their letters. “There have been times when I have been asked to go around other post offices such as Lingampally and Miyapur seeking my parcel. The postmen refuse to deliver it at home stating they are overworked. I had updated my Aadhaar details recently and it’s been a month and I haven’t received it from the post office,” said S Jagan Mohan, a resident of Central Park-2. Residents claim that whenever they have letters addressed to them, they get calls from the post office asking them to collect it.

Admitting the staff crunch, India Post officials said that they intend to resolve the issue latest by April. “There are 12 employees at the Kothaguda post office, of which three were recently recruited on outsourcing basis. Since the area has expanded very fast, our postmen are finding it difficult to cater to the rising population. We would enquire into this matter and soon have more people in that area by April,” said Ramana Reddy, assistant director, Hyderabad city division, India Post.
