HYDERABAD: Over 1200 long-pending PhDs have been cancelled this year by Osmania University as only 1280 students have submitted their PhDs before the deadline, said the vice-chancellor of the varsity. He said a similar exercise will be taken up next year to clear backlogs and release notification for new PhD seats.
Vice-chancellor Prof D Ravinder, who completed one year in office, launched several initiatives and introduced major reforms during the press conference.
“The deadline to complete the thesis was April 13, 2022. But, only 1280 students have submitted. The number of students who failed to avail the opportunity will be much higher than those who submitted,” Ravinder told TOI. He said that most of these research scholars have joined between 2009 and 2017.
“For those who joined in 2018, we are giving time till June 2023. If the candidate fails to submit their thesis before the deadline, their admission will be cancelled,” he added explaining that the varsity is trying to streamline PhD admissions.
The VC has made it clear that they are not going to implement National Education Policy to the fullest.
“States which are implementing NEP, are facing issues,” he said and added they are, however, going to implement some of the features of NEP like cluster system, but won’t be considering Central Universities Common Entrance Test as students from the state will be at the receiving end as the exam will be based on CBSE syllabus.
Ravinder also said that they are also planning to build a botanical garden, oxygen park, and a Civil services academy, along with infrastructure development and beautification initiatives. He also spoke about various initiatives, including unique identification cards, WiFi access points, CCTV cameras, a first-of-its-kind Institute of Indo-Pacific studies, new hostel block and free shuttle service for girls, among others. A pylon is also being constructed to celebrate the century-old university and its contribution to the society.
