Hydebank inmates make mugs and buns for frontline workers during Covid-19 pandemic

Inmates in Northern Ireland are baking buns for doctors and nurses fighting at the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Young men and female prisoners at Hydebank Wood College during the Covid-19 pandemic have been demonstrating new ceramic design and baking skills.

They have made tea and coffee mugs and baked buns for local hospital nurses, shop and charity workers and firefighters.

Governor Gary Milling said: “Like many in our community over the past weeks and months, the young men and women in our care at Hydebank have been reflecting on the ‘hidden heroes’ who have been working tirelessly during the Covid pandemic.

"The gift of mugs and tray bakes was simply their way of saying thank you to those people.”

Rachael Dinsmore, Activities Governor at Hydebank, said: “During the Covid pandemic we ran a competition in partnership with Mugshots to design a mug with the ‘hidden heroes’ theme.

"This was open to all students, male and female, and generated considerable interest across the college. The winning design, created by one of the females, was printed on the new mugs.”

Tray bakes and mugs were donated to firefighters at Lisburn Road Fire and Rescue Service station, shop workers at Tesco, Newtownbreda, Prison Fellowship workers at Donegal Street and local hospital nurses.
